“Doljabi” 돌잡이 is a Korean fortune-telling game, which takes place at a child’s 1st birthday celebration. Items that reflect admirable professions and good fortune are placed in front of the baby, whom is then encouraged to grab his or her favorite. Typical items are, stethoscope (doctor), gavel (lawyer), cash ($$$), string (long-life), amongst others. We went a bit non-traditional with our selection of items. (We didn’t want to stress her out, so soon. Haha.)
Mommy and Grandma handmade the items with a glue gun and some felt sheets. I had seen something similar somewhere on Pinterest and thought they would be such cute toys and fun for photos. Although these were planned way in advance of the party, I found that free-handing them were easiest. I just cut and glued on the fly.
In modern “dohls” (Korean 1st Birthday Parties), there is a raffle to accompany the game. As only the grandparents selected the Bible as their choice, what can we say? Grandparents know best!
